| Beschrijving keerzijde | Large denomination mark M (signifying 40 nummi) occupying the central field, with a six-pointed star to the left and a crescent to the right flanking the numeral. A cross surmounts the M above, and the officina letter appears below the M in the lower field. The exergual inscription CON identifies the Constantinople mint. The reverse design follows the standard Justinianic follis format established at the monetary reform, with bold, deeply struck letterforms on a broad flan. |

Justinian's large copper follis — the 40-nummi piece — was itself a relatively recent innovation when these were struck, introduced under Anastasius I in 498 as part of a sweeping monetary reform that restored a functional fiduciary bronze coinage to the Eastern Empire after decades of tiny, nearly worthless nummi. The crescent mintmark variant places this among the earlier Constantinople issues of Justinian's reign, prior to the administrative and denominational adjustments that followed the Nika revolt of 532.
