| Obverse description | Facing helmeted and cuirassed bust of Emperor Justinian I, portrayed in a frontal, imperial military guise. The emperor holds a globus cruciger in his right hand and supports a shield with his left arm; a cross appears to the right in the field. The portrait exhibits the characteristic flat, hieratic style of early Byzantine coinage produced at the Carthage mint, with bold, slightly stylized facial features. The imperial legend encircles the bust, identifying the emperor by his full titulature. |

| Reverse description | A large M, denoting the value of 40 nummi (one follis), dominates the reverse field, flanked on either side by the regnal year notation ANNO and its corresponding numeral. A cross surmounts the M at the top of the field, while the officina letter S (Secunda, second officina) appears beneath. The mint signature CAR, identifying the Carthage mint, is placed in the exergue. The bold, somewhat provincial execution of the letterforms is characteristic of the Carthaginian workshop during the reign of Justinian I. |
