Obverse description Frontal bust of Emperor Justinian I, helmeted and cuirassed, facing the viewer directly in the hieratic Byzantine imperial tradition. The helmet is adorned with a pendilia hanging on either side of the face, and the emperor wears an elaborately decorated cuirass with pteryges visible at the shoulders. In his right hand he holds a globus cruciger, and in his left a shield ornamented with a horseman motif. The encircling Latin legend reads D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVG, interrupted by the imperial portrait, set within a dotted border.
