Obverse description Emperor Justinian I depicted enthroned facing, wearing imperial regalia including a crown with pendilia and a loros, his right hand raised in a gesture of authority and his left hand holding a globus cruciger. The emperor is shown in a formal, hieratic frontal style characteristic of early Byzantine coinage, seated upon a high-backed throne visible at the lower portion of the design. A cross appears to the right of the enthroned figure. The encircling Latin legend reads D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVG, identifying the ruler as Our Lord Justinian, Perpetual Augustus.
