Antioch's mint was one of the most politically loaded production centers in the early Byzantine system — close enough to the Persian frontier that its output reflected military financing as much as monetary policy. The ☩THЄЧP mint signature on this type identifies the Theoupolis workshop, the name Justinian imposed on Antioch after the catastrophic earthquake of 526 AD killed upward of 250,000 people. He rebuilt the city and renamed it "City of God." The coinage followed the new name almost immediately.
