| Obverse lettering | D N IVSTINVS P P AVG (Translation: D(-ominus) N(-oster) IVSTINVS P(-er-)P(-etuus) AVG(-ustus) `Our Lord Justin, Perpetual Emperor`) |
| Reverse description | The reverse is dominated by the large capital letter M, the Greek numeral denoting 40 nummi, centrally placed in the field. A cross appears to each side of the M and a third cross is positioned above it, giving the type its characteristic ♰M♰ designation. Beneath the M, the officina letter identifies the workshop responsible for striking the coin. The exergue carries the mint mark CON, an abbreviation for Constantinopolis, all executed in the bold, functional style standard to Byzantine follis issues of this period. |
