Obverse description Facing right bust of Emperor Justin I, pearl-diademed, cuirassed and draped, rendered in the late antique frontal imperial tradition. The effigy is depicted with characteristic Byzantine formalism, the emperor shown in military dress with a visible paludamentum. A circular Latin legend surrounds the portrait, identifying the emperor by name and imperial title in abbreviated form. The legend reads DN IVSTINVS PP AVG, denoting Justin I as Dominus Noster and Augustus. The overall style reflects the transitional period between late Roman and early Byzantine coinage.
