Obverse description Frontal bust of Emperor Constans II in imperial military attire, depicted facing, wearing a crown surmounted by a cross and draped in a chlamys. The emperor holds a globus cruciger in his right hand, symbolizing Christian imperial sovereignty. A Greek legend partially encircles the effigy in the field to the right, rendered in the characteristic angular lettering of mid-seventh-century Byzantine coinage. The die work is typical of the Constantinople mint of this period, with bold but somewhat schematic modeling of the imperial figure. The flan is irregular, as is characteristic of hammered bronze issues of this reign.

Reverse description The reverse bears the large Greek numeral M (denoting 40 nummi) prominently in the center of the field, flanked to the left by a vertical stroke and to the right by a partial epsilon or crescent-like control mark. Above the M, a cross is visible, serving as a mint or regnal year indicator. Below the M, a horizontal exergual line separates the denomination mark from the lower field. The officina letter and regnal year numeral, identifying the specific emission, are placed in the surrounding field consistent with Constantinople mint practice of the period.
