Obverse description Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Anastasius I facing right, rendered in the late antique Byzantine imperial style. The effigy displays the characteristic diadem with pendilia, a military cuirass with visible paludamentum draped over the left shoulder, and a spear or sceptre visible at the shoulder. The portrait is executed in low relief with broad facial features typical of early Byzantine coinage. The peripheral legend encircles the bust, with the imperial titulature distributed around the field.

Reverse description Central large denomination mark M (Greek numeral for 40), boldly struck in the field, denoting the value of 40 nummi. A six-pointed star appears to the left of the M, and a cross potent or patriarchal cross is positioned to the upper right. Below the M, the officina letter epsilon (ϵ) identifies the fifth workshop of the Constantinople mint. The exergual inscription CON identifies the mint of Constantinopolis. The overall reverse design follows the standard reformed follis type introduced by Anastasius I in 498 AD.
