| Reverse description | Large Greek letter M (mark of value for 40 nummi) prominently displayed at center of the field, surmounted by a cross above the apex of the M. To the left of the M appears the officina letter A (denoting the first workshop), and to the right a decorative star or cross element. Below the M, in the exergue, the mint mark CON identifies the Constantinople mint. The reverse design follows the standard type introduced by the Anastasian monetary reform of 498, establishing the large M as the dominant reverse motif on the newly reformed follis coinage. The overall style is bold and functional, with the value mark rendered in high relief against a flat, unadorned field. |
