| Beschrijving keerzijde | Printed in olive-green and brown tones on cream paper, the reverse centres on a detailed vignette of a traditional Wachau courtyard with an arched gateway, a rustic tower-roofed building, and lush vegetation rendered in a fine illustrative style. Flanking the central vignette on both sides are tall decorative panels with stylised vine and leaf motifs in green, each incorporating a circular '40' denomination cartouche at the top. The lower margin carries the issuer legend and validity inscription in period Gothic script. |

Spitz an der Donau issued these Heller notes as part of the sprawling Austrian Notgeld phenomenon, when postwar coin shortages left hundreds of municipalities scrambling to produce their own low-denomination scrip. Eduard Sieger in Vienna handled a large volume of this municipal work, and the Wachau series was among the more coherently designed regional groups to come out of his presses.
The Jaksch/Pick suffix "IIIa" indicates a specific series variant — collectors of Austrian Notgeld will know how granularly this material has been cataloged, with paper color, cancellation type, and overprint details all driving meaningful value distinctions within what looks, at first glance, like a trivial village note.
