| 正面描述 | The obverse is laid out in a simple letterpress style with the denomination numeral '40' in bold type within framed boxes at left and right, and 'HELLER' in large capitals across the upper register. The municipal coat of arms of Schärding — a quartered shield incorporating a chequered field, diagonal stripes, and an eagle — occupies a dotted-border vignette at centre. Below, the issuing authority 'Stadtgemeinde Schärding a. I.' appears in two lines flanking the arms, with the redemption text and council resolution date rendered in smaller type across the lower portion of the note. |

| 背面描述 | The reverse carries a central vignette rendered in a woodcut-like illustrative style, presenting a view of a historic cobblestone courtyard in Schärding, framed by tall narrow building facades — a reference to the old pillory site. Silhouetted figures of two rogue characters, each carrying a pack on a stick, are placed as decorative flanking elements to the left and right of the central scene. A two-line humorous inscription in German appears below the architectural vignette, with the denomination '40 HELLER' repeated in shield cartouches at upper left and right. |

Schärding's 40 Heller Notgeld was one of hundreds of small-denomination emergency issues produced by Austrian municipalities following the currency chaos of the post-WWI period, when the Vienna government could not supply sufficient coinage for everyday transactions. The Stadtgemeinde commissioned local printer J. Vees to produce the notes — a practical decision that kept costs low and turnaround fast, though it meant quality control varied considerably within the same series.
Notgeld of this type was officially demonetized once the Austrian crown stabilized, but local issuers often dragged out redemption windows.
