| Obverse description | Plain white ground within a decorative typographic border of repeating geometric and dot motifs. The issuer name 'Gem. Meggenhofen' is set in large ornamental Gothic lettering at the top, followed by 'Gutschein über' and the denomination value 'Vierzig Hell.' in bold white letters on a dark stippled panel. Meggenhofen is a small Upper Austrian village, and its 1921 Heller notes belong to the vast wave of Austrian municipal notgeld issued between 1919 and 1922 — a direct consequence of the coinage shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg Empire and the economic dislocation of the immediate postwar years. Hundreds of Gemeinden printed their own fractional notes during this period, many commissioning local printers with no particular artistic pretension.
The Jaksc/Pick reference IId designation places this within a specific sub-series, suggesting Meggenhofen issued multiple Heller denominations under the same authorization. Heinrich Hattinger signed as the responsible municipal official, almost certainly the Bürgermeister at the time.
