Krems an der Donau was among the hundreds of Austrian municipalities forced to produce their own small-denomination emergency notes — Notgeld — during the prolonged currency chaos that followed the First World War. The imperial coinage system had effectively collapsed, and the new Austrian state lacked the infrastructure to flood the provinces with adequate small change in time. Cities like Krems filled the gap themselves.
The "EDNA" designation within the series reference distinguishes this issue by printing variant or paper stock, not a separate authorization. Locally printed Notgeld from this period varied considerably in execution — quality control was the printer's problem, not Vienna's.
