De Javasche Bank turned to the American Bank Note Company for this series because the disruption of World War One had severed reliable access to European security printers — the bank's previous supplier relationships ran through the Netherlands and were effectively suspended during the war years. ABNC filled that gap across multiple denominations simultaneously, producing notes intended to circulate in the Netherlands East Indies under colonial monetary administration from Batavia.

The 40 guilder denomination is the awkward one in this series. It sits between more naturally spaced values and saw comparatively limited demand, which means surviving examples in any grade are genuinely less common than the lower denominations from the same print run.
