The Nederlandsche Bank was established by royal decree of Willem I in 1814, and this 40 Gulden note belongs to the bank's earliest circulating series — a denomination that has no equivalent in any later Dutch issue. Enschedé in Haarlem has printed Dutch banknotes almost without interruption since the bank's founding.
