| Beschrijving voorzijde | Conjoined effigies of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain in truncated bust form, facing left, with the King's portrait in the foreground and the Queen's slightly behind. The legend FELIPE VI Y LETIZIA arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, while ESPAÑA flanked by a fleur-de-lis ornament and the date 2022 appear along the lower field. | Aanvullende informatie |
This issue commemorates the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the globe, completed in 1522 when the Victoria — the sole surviving vessel of Magellan's original five-ship fleet — limped into Sanlúcar de Barrameda under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano. Magellan himself had died in the Philippines the previous year. Of the roughly 270 men who departed in 1519, only 18 completed the full voyage.
The Real Casa de la Moneda issued the coin under the face-value denomination of 40 euros, a figure with no circulation function but rooted in Spain's long tradition of collector-series face values that deliberately avoid overlap with circulating denominations.
