The design is executed in high relief against a flat field. The circular legend REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY runs along the upper periphery, with the date 1844 displayed in the lower exergual area flanked by small decorative stars. The engraving, attributed to Agustín Jouve, reflects the neoclassical style typical of mid-nineteenth-century Latin American coinage produced at the Paris Mint. |

| Descrição do reverso | Central device consists of the bold numeral '40' enclosed within a plain raised circle, with the denomination legend CENTESIMOS inscribed in a curved band immediately above the numeral within the inner circle. The central device is surrounded by a wreath of two laurel or olive branches tied at the base, their stems meeting at the bottom and their leaves extending symmetrically upward to frame the central medallion. The overall design is plain and utilitarian, consistent with the reverse style of Uruguayan copper coinage of the period, engraved by Lucien Mége at the Paris Mint. |
