| Obverse description | The obverse features a radiant sun with a human face at center, rendered in high relief with straight and wavy alternating rays extending toward the rim. The sun motif, a national symbol of Uruguay, dominates the field. The circular legend REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY arcs around the upper periphery, while the date 1856 appears in the lower exergual area flanked by small ornamental dots. The overall design is bold and emblematic, consistent with mid-19th century South American republican coinage. |

| Reverse description | The reverse displays the large numeral '40' in bold relief at center, set within a plain circular frame. The word CENTESIMOS arcs above the numeral within the inner circle, and the word ESSAI appears at the very top of the field above the frame. A symmetrical wreath of laurel branches frames the central design, tied at the base with a small bow or knot. The entire motif is contained within a beaded border, typical of essai or pattern coinage of the period. |
