Descripción del anverso Printed in dark ink on plain woven silk, the design is contained within a rectangular border of foliate and geometric ornamental work, with grain or wheat stalk vignettes flanking the central text panel on each side and decorative motifs at the upper corners. A wave-and-scroll guilloche band runs along the lower border. The central panel carries multi-line inscriptions in Chinese characters and Arabic script indicating the denomination and issuing authority, with the numeral 40 rendered in large characters to the right.

Descripción del reverso The reverse presents the unprinted face of the woven silk substrate, showing only the natural pinkish-red tone of the fabric with the textile weave clearly visible. No printed design, inscription, or vignette appears on this side, consistent with the production method typical of Chinese local silk currency issues of the early Republican period.

Tihwa's 1923 silk notes are among the more unusual local emissions from Xinjiang's warlord period, when provincial isolation forced administrators to improvise both medium and denominator. Silk was chosen not for ceremony but for practicality — cotton paper was scarce in the interior, and locally woven fabric provided a workable substrate that could be produced without importing materials from coastal China.

The 40 cash denomination itself is odd. It fits no standard fractional logic and almost certainly reflects a local pricing need or coin-shortage calculation specific to Tihwa's market economy at the time.
