Obverse description Counterstamped host coin bearing the draped bust of French King Louis XVI facing left, surrounded by the Latin royal legend. Superimposed on the obverse field is the Bernese counterstamp, consisting of the heraldic bear on a square shield, applied in 1816 to authorize the host coin for circulation within the Canton of Bern. The counterstamp punch is bold and clearly defined against the original coin's surface. The host coin was struck at a French mint between 1775 and 1791 during the reign of Louis XVI.
