| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Louis XVI facing left, struck in the style of the French royal effigy. An oval Bern arms counterstamp — displaying the bear of Bern — has been applied to the field, validating the host coin for circulation within the Canton of Bern. The surrounding legend reads LUD·XVI·D·G·FR·ET·NAV·REX·, identifying the issuer as King Louis XVI of France and Navarre. The host coin is a French Écu (KM#564), struck between 1774 and 1792 at various mints. |

| Reverse description | Central oval shield bearing three fleurs-de-lis, the arms of France, surmounted by an elaborate royal crown and flanked by two crossed olive or laurel branches tied at the base with a ribbon. An oval Bernese counterstamp inscribed '40 BZ' is applied to the right side of the shield, denoting the revalued denomination of 40 Batzen. The peripheral Latin legend, reading ·SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM, encircles the design, with the date 1790 and mint letter A (Paris) also present in the legend, attributing the host coin to the Paris Mint. |
