Obverse description Draped bust of Louis XV facing left, struck on the host French Écu of 1726. A small oval Bern counterstamp bearing the arms of the Canton of Bern is applied to the obverse field. The peripheral legend reads LUD • XV • D • G • FR • ET NAV • REX in Latin characters. The portrait displays fine Rococo-era engraving characteristic of the French royal mint. The counterstamp authenticates the piece for circulation within Bern at a revalued denomination of 40 Batzen.

Reverse description The reverse of the host French Écu displays the crowned oval shield of France bearing three fleurs-de-lis, flanked by symmetrical laurel and palm branches tied at the base. The circular legend SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM surrounds the design, with the date 1726 and mint letter A (Paris) in the exergue area. A rectangular or oval Bern counterstamp inscribed 40 BZ• is applied to the right field, denoting the revalued denomination for Swiss cantonal circulation. The overall composition reflects the formal heraldic style of the French royal coinage of the early eighteenth century.
