Issued as part of Spain's ambitious 1992 commemorative program, which coincided with the Barcelona Olympics, the Seville Expo, and the quincentennial of Columbus's first voyage — a confluence of events the Spanish government leveraged into one of the most extensive modern commemorative coin series ever produced by a single nation in a single year. The Real Casa de la Moneda released dozens of denominations across that program, with several pieces specifically honoring the mint's own history and equipment.
