| Beschrijving voorzijde | The quartered royal coat of arms of Spain occupies the central field, featuring the castles of Castile, lions of León, chains of Navarre, and the fleur-de-lis of the Bourbon dynasty, with the pomegranate of Granada at the base and an escutcheon at the center. The shield is surmounted by the royal crown and flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, each bearing scrolling banners inscribed PLVS and VLTRA respectively. The Madrid mint mark appears to the right of the shield. The legend ESPAÑA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 40000 PTAS is inscribed along the lower periphery, both separated from the border by a continuous beaded inner circle. |

| Beschrijving keerzijde | A large laureate bust of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (Charles I of Spain) faces left in right profile, rendered after the celebrated portrait sculpture by León Leoni, depicted bearded and draped in imperial armor with a mantle. The dates 1500 and 2000 appear in the left field, flanking the bust to commemorate the fifth centennial of his birth. The circumferential legend, separated from the beaded border by a raised rim, reads V CENTENARIO to the left and CAROLVS IMPERATOR to the right, with decorative rosette stops separating the inscriptions. |
