Bảo Đại ascended the throne in 1926 as a teenager freshly returned from schooling in France, and the Vietnamese imperial coinage of his reign was produced under the administrative machinery of French Indochina rather than any independent Vietnamese monetary authority. The X#M8 designation signals this is a non-circulating presentation or palace-issue piece — struck for ceremonial distribution rather than commerce, which explains why survivors frequently appear in grades inconsistent with actual use.
The silver content and weight standard followed French Indochinese conventions, not traditional Vietnamese ones.
