Ramon Perellos y Roccaful served as Grand Master of the Hospitallers from 1697 to 1720, and this issue marks the opening year of that tenure. The Order's Maltese mint operated with considerable autonomy throughout the late 17th century, producing a coinage system anchored to the tari — a unit with roots in the Arab-Norman monetary tradition of Sicily, retained by the Knights long after it had disappeared elsewhere in the Mediterranean.
The 4 tari denomination sat at a practical middle weight for commercial use in Valletta's harbor economy, where the Order's financial machinery — and its fleet — depended on steady silver circulation.
