Obverse description Central field dominated by a quartered shield bearing the arms of Grand Master Pietro del Monte impaled with those of the Order of St. John; the upper quarters display a lion rampant and a cross, while the lower quarters bear additional heraldic charges. The shield is rendered in bold relief with fine engraved detailing typical of hammered coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading clockwise from a cross pattée stop. The entire design is enclosed within a rope or cable border running along the coin's periphery.
