Manuel Pinto de Fonseca served as Grand Master of the Order from 1741 until his death in 1773 at the reported age of 92, making him the longest-reigning Grand Master in the Order's history. By 1768 the Order's actual military power had long since evaporated, but Malta retained the right to strike its own coinage — a privilege jealously maintained as one of the few remaining markers of genuine sovereignty. The 4 Tari was the workhorse denomination of Maltese circulation, used heavily in local trade rather than ceremonial exchange.
Pinto was notorious for his vanity and extravagant court, funded in part by the revenues of commanderies across Catholic Europe.
