| Obverse description | Central shield bearing the quartered arms of Grand Master Jean de la Cassière — the lion passant of his personal arms impaled with the eight-pointed cross of the Order of St. John — set within a beaded inner circle. The heraldic composition is rendered in the bold, slightly rough style characteristic of Maltese hammered coinage of the sixteenth century. A circular Latin legend runs between the inner and outer beaded borders, naming the Grand Master and his office. |

| Reverse description | Within a raised beaded inner circle, the severed head of St. John the Baptist is depicted in high relief, presented face-forward resting upon a circular paten, with long flowing hair and beard rendered in vigorous, swirling lines characteristic of late Renaissance Maltese hammered coinage. The devotional image alludes to the patron saint of the Order of St. John. A circular Latin legend, divided by a Maltese cross, is inscribed between the inner and outer beaded borders, reading PROPTER VERITATEM ET IVSTICIAM. |
