The "Vlieger" (flyer) and "Krabbelaar" (crawler) are popular nicknames applied by contemporaries to this issue — the former for the coin's tendency to circulate rapidly out of the duchy, the latter a more derisive term for its debased quality relative to earlier issues. Charles V's absorption of Guelders followed the 1543 Treaty of Venlo, which ended the long contest between the Habsburgs and Duke William of Cleves. The Nijmegen mint struck this type during the transitional years immediately after that annexation, making it one of the earliest Habsburg-administered issues from a duchy that had resisted incorporation for decades.
