| Obverse description | Crowned double-headed imperial eagle displayed in the central field, with wings spread and talons clutching orb and sceptre, set within a beaded inner circle. The date appears in the upper field between the two crowned heads of the eagle. The circumferential Latin legend runs between the inner beaded circle and the outer rim, identifying the issuer as Holy Roman Emperor and King of the Spains. The die work reflects the vigorous hammered style characteristic of mid-sixteenth century Flemish coinage. |
