The "Bust type I" 4 Speciedaler belongs to the period when Christian IV was aggressively expanding Danish naval and commercial power, funding ambitions that would soon drag the kingdom into the disastrous Lower Saxon phase of the Thirty Years' War beginning in 1625. These large multiple-speciedaler pieces were prestige instruments rather than everyday currency — struck to demonstrate fiscal credibility to foreign creditors and mercenary paymasters at a moment when Christian desperately needed both.

The oval provincial shields in the reverse arrangement reflect the Danish crown's claim over a sprawling composite monarchy: Norway, the duchies, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and more. Within three years of the last pieces struck in this series, Christian's military adventure in northern Germany had collapsed entirely at the Battle of Lutter in 1626.
