Potosí's silver output in 1815 was entangled in the chaos of the Rio de la Plata's independence struggle — the city changed hands repeatedly between royalist and patriot forces during this period, and the mint continued striking under whoever held the city. This piece dates to a royalist interval, yet bears the name of the revolutionary provisional government, reflecting how quickly political winds shifted and how slowly die changes followed.
