| Obverse description | Bare-headed right-facing effigy of King Christian IX occupies the central field, rendered in fine relief with naturalistic portraiture characteristic of mid-19th century Danish coinage. The encircling legend reads CHRISTIAN IX D: G: DANIAE V: G: REX, abbreviated for 'by the Grace of God, King of Denmark, of the Vandals and the Goths.' The date appears below the truncation of the neck, flanked on either side by the royal mint mark (a crowned orb) and the Mint Master's initials (CS). The overall design reflects the classical portrait tradition employed at the Copenhagen mint during the reign of Christian IX. |
