Frederik III issued this denomination amid Denmark's fiscal exhaustion following the wars with Sweden — the Dano-Swedish Wars of 1655–60 had nearly bankrupted the crown and forced a constitutional revolution in 1660 that abolished the noble estates' tax exemptions and transformed Denmark into an absolute monarchy. The billon alloy reflects that strain directly: the silver content was depressed to keep coinage flowing while the treasury rebuilt.
KM#257 is specific to the monogram type, distinguished from earlier 4 skilling issues of the reign by the crowned royal cipher replacing the portrait format.
