| Obverse description | Central field bears the interlaced royal cypher of Frederik III (F3) surmounted by a royal crown, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in bold, deeply struck letters with the numeral 3 prominently interlaced through the F. A decorative chain or rope border separates the inner beaded circle from the outer legend. The circular legend reads DOMINVS PROVIDEBIT (The Lord will provide), the personal motto of Frederik III, running counterclockwise around the periphery. |

| Additional information |
Frederik III issued this denomination amid Denmark's fiscal exhaustion following the wars with Sweden — the Dano-Swedish Wars of 1655–60 had nearly bankrupted the crown and forced a constitutional revolution in 1660 that abolished the noble estates' tax exemptions and transformed Denmark into an absolute monarchy. The billon alloy reflects that strain directly: the silver content was depressed to keep coinage flowing while the treasury rebuilt.
KM#257 is specific to the monogram type, distinguished from earlier 4 skilling issues of the reign by the crowned royal cipher replacing the portrait format.
