Další informace

This piece is a Spanish colonial 4 reales host coin — almost certainly from the Carolus series struck at various American mints — that received an official Ottoman countermark authorizing its continued circulation in Tunisia under the joint authority of Sultan Abdülhamid II and the Husainid Bey Muhammad III as-Sadiq. The countermarking practice allowed the Regency of Tunis to validate foreign silver already in circulation rather than remint it, a practical acknowledgment of just how much Spanish-American coinage had penetrated Mediterranean trade networks.

Muhammad III as-Sadiq had signed the humiliating Convention of La Marsa's predecessor agreements with France by this point, and Tunisian fiscal autonomy was already eroding fast. France would establish its protectorate just three years later, in 1881.
