| Description de l’avers | The obverse displays the Type V Salvadoran countermark of 1868, applied to a milled Spanish-American colonial host coin (host year 1812). The countermark takes one of three known varieties: a plain Liberty cap above a shield on draped flags within a 10 mm incuse circle; a radiant Liberty cap above a shield on draped flags within a 12 mm circle; or a Liberty cap above a shield within branches within a 12 mm circle. The underlying host coin shows the characteristic quartered castles-and-lions crowned shield of the Spanish colonial coinage, with partial legends and mintmark visible in the field. The countermark was applied by El Salvador to validate and authenticate circulating foreign silver coinage for domestic use. |
