| Obverse description | The obverse displays the Mexican republican eagle type of the host coin, struck at the Mexico City Mint in 1827. A spread-winged Mexican eagle perched upon a cactus rising from a rocky outcrop amid water occupies the central field, flanked by a wreath of oak and laurel branches. The circular legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA curves along the upper periphery within a beaded border. A prominent round hole, punched by Costa Rican authorities as part of the Type I countermark procedure, is centered in the lower field, partially obscuring the snake and cactus base of the eagle device. A small circular Costa Rican countermark punch is visible near the center upper field above the eagle's head. |
