| Obverse description | Bare-headed portrait bust of Rafael Carrera facing left, rendered in high relief with fine detailing of the hair and short beard. The engraver's signature FRENER appears in small incuse letters at the base of the neck truncation, accompanied by a small decorative device. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy, running from lower left to upper right along the beaded border. The field is smooth and unadorned, allowing the portrait to dominate the design. |

| Additional information |
Rafael Carrera ruled Guatemala as its first president and, from 1854, as president-for-life — a title granted by a compliant congress he largely controlled. These silver reales were struck during the final years of his regime, which ended only with his death in April 1865, leaving the series to conclude under his successor Cerna. The Casa de Moneda in Guatemala City produced coinage of notoriously uneven quality throughout this period, and alignment issues between dies are frequently encountered on this type.
