Additional information

The Provincias del Río de la Plata declared independence from Spain in 1816, but these coins predate that moment — struck while the revolutionary government was still fighting for survival against royalist forces in the interior. Potosí itself changed hands repeatedly during this period; the mint fell to royalist control in 1813 and again in 1815, which directly interrupted production and accounts for the compressed date range of this type.

Dies were cut locally under difficult wartime conditions, and the resulting strikes are frequently uneven across the flan.
