Obverse description Central field displays the quartered royal arms of Castile and León — alternating castles and lions — surmounted by a royal crown, with the mintmark 'S' and assayer mark 'M' flanking the shield at left and right respectively, and the denomination numeral '4' positioned at upper right. The circular legend in Latin reads CAROLVS II D G HISPAN REX, distributed around the periphery within a beaded inner border. The engraving is characteristic of late 17th-century Spanish milled coinage produced at the Seville mint.
