Obverse description Central device features the quartered Royal Arms of Spain — displaying the castles of Castile and lions of León, with the pomegranate of Granada at the base point — surmounted by a large ornate royal crown. The assayer initial 'J' appears to the left of the shield and the denomination numeral '4' to the right, each flanked by small rosette ornaments. A circular legend in Latin runs around the periphery of the coin, separated from the central device by a raised beaded border. The design follows the standard Columnario-era armorial type struck at the Guatemala City mint under Fernando VI.
