Obverse description Central field occupied by the quartered royal shield of Ferdinand and Isabella, displaying the castles of Castile and the lions of León in alternating quarters, with the impaled arms of Aragon (pallets) and Granada at the base, surmounted by a royal crown rendered in relief. The mint mark 'T' for Toledo appears to the left of the shield within the inner beaded circle. The circular Latin legend surrounding the shield reads FERNANDVS ET ELISABET D G, separated by pellets, identifying the Catholic Monarchs by name and invoking divine authority.
