Obverse description Central field occupied by the elaborate quartered royal arms of Spain within a shield surmounted by an ornate royal crown. The quartering displays the arms of Castile (castle), León (lion), Aragon (pales), and Portugal (roundels), with Granada in base and a smaller escutcheon at centre. To the left of the shield appears the assayer's initial P (for the mintmaster Pedro Rodríguez); to the right the denomination mark IIII (4 Reales); below the shield the Segovia aqueduct mintmark S. The surrounding circular legend in Latin reads PHILIPPVS · IIII · D · G P IIII, separated by pellet stops, set within a continuous beaded border.
