Obverse description Central crowned quartered shield of the Spanish Habsburg arms, displaying the castles of Castile and lions of León in the first and fourth quarters, with the pale-striped arms of Aragon and the pomegranate of Granada in the lower base, surmounted by an ornate crown in high relief. The mint mark 'S' for Seville is visible to the left of the shield, with the denomination mark 'IIII' to the right. A circular beaded border frames the composition, with the royal Latin legend running around the periphery, partially visible on this hammered flan. The striking is characteristic of the macuquina (cob) coinage of the period, with the irregular planchet resulting in an off-center impression.
