Obverse description Draped bust of Ferdinand VII facing right, occupying the central field of the coin. The face of the effigy bears a rectangular lattice countermark applied by Cuban authorities in 1841, consisting of a grid pattern of raised squares punched into the portrait. The surrounding legend reads HERN·7·POR LA G· DE DIOS Y LA CONST· with the date 1823 inscribed at the base. The coin was originally struck at the Valencia mint for Spanish circulation.
