Obverse description Armored and draped bust of King Charles IV facing right, with elaborately styled hair tied with a ribbon and flowing queue, set within a beaded inner border. The royal effigy is rendered in the portrait style established for the Spanish colonial milled coinage. The encircling legend reads CAROLUS IV DEI GRATIA, with the date 1790 appearing in the lower exergual area below the bust.

The denomination mark 4R and assayer initial P appear to the left of the shield, with mint mark PTS (Potosi) and additional assayer letter to the right. The surrounding legend reads HISPAN ET IND REX, identifying the monarch as King of the Spains and the Indies.
