Obverse description Central quartered shield bearing alternating castles of Castile and lions of León, divided by a bold cross of Jerusalem whose arms extend to the toothed inner border. The shield is set within a circular legend in Latin script reading CAROLVS TERTIVS. The flan, characteristic of cob coinage, is irregular in outline with a roughly textured field produced by the hand-striking technique.
